Help Celebrate World Cancer Day!

Help Celebrate World Cancer Day!

Coming up on Friday, February 4th is World Cancer Day. In order to spread awareness, Children’s Cancer Connection is asking you to change your Facebook profile picture for the day. We’ve created a JPEG photo that we would like our volunteers, families, and supporters to put on their Facebook. Just follow these instructions!

1. Click here to visit the "World Cancer Day" page on CCC's website.

2. Once you're on the page scroll to the bottom, right click on the picture and save it to your computer.

3. On February 4, log in to your Facebook account. Scroll over your current profile picture and text will pop up that says, “change picture.” Click on this text and follow the prompts to upload the “Crush Childhood Cancer” graphic as your profile.

4. Encourage others to do so as well...and if you'd really love to go above and beyond, copy and paste the follow sentences as the caption for the photo: "I support Children's Cancer Connection and World Cancer Day 2011! Visit: www.ChildrensCancerConnection.org.

Thanks in advance for supporting Children’s Cancer Connection by creating awareness on World Cancer Day!

Welcome New Intern: Shannon Kerr!

Children's Cancer Connection would like to welcome our newest communications intern, Shannon Kerr! Shannon is from Urbandale, Iowa where she attended Dowling Catholic High School. She is currently a sophomore broadcast news major, marketing minor at Drake University. She has been involved with many different organizations on campus including Alpha Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Student Activities Board Committees. Shannon enjoys swimming, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends!

"I'm excited to learn more about Children's Cancer Connection and all the wonderful things they do for the Des Moines community," said Kerr. "When I was younger, my older sister suffered from cancer and after seeing her survive it, it's special to me to help these families go through some of the same obstacles. It's so amazing how everything we do here has such an impact on their lives and brings joy to these families on daily basis."

Shannon is also excited about the experience and opportunites she will gain working with Emily Beckmann, Director of Marketing and Communications. She can't wait to expand her marketing and communication knowledge and skills during her time at Children's Cancer Connection.

Why volunteer with Children's Cancer Connection?

Children's Cancer Connection utilizes hundreds of volunteers every year so we can provide excellent programs for families affected by childhood cancer at little or no cost to them. In this episode of "Simply Connected," two of our devoted volunteers share their stories about why they personally believe in Children's Cancer Connection and why they volunteer to support our cause each week!

The Medical Side of Childhood Cancer and Survivorship

Dr. Woods-Swafford, Pediatric Hemotologist Oncologist at Blank Children's Hosiptal, and Mark Slocum, Executive Director at Children's Cancer Connection, joined us on Simply Connected to discuss the medical side of childhood cancer including topics focused on late effects and survivorship.
