It’s hard to believe that we are already talking about holiday cards but they’re here! The 2011 Holiday Cards by Kids Collection features 8 unique cards drawn by Camp Heart Connection Oncology and Sibling Campers.

Cards are available in assortment sets which include 24 cards (3 of each design) and 25 envelopes for $15 plus shipping and handling. On orders over 50 cards you may choose a single design package.

This year we have added some personalization options that can make your holiday cards even more special. Last year we offered free imprinting on order of 500 or more of the same design…but this year we’ve lowered that minimum order to 250! Custom personalization allows you to change the inside text of the card and add your own logo or picture which makes them great for corporate holiday cards.

Like the idea of personalization but don’t quite have an order of 250? We are offering the same personalization on orders of less than 250 for only $35. This is a great option for adding a family photo or family signatures to your holiday cards.

Childhood Cancer Butter Cow

CCC mom Janie Ostrem was awarded one of the “butter cows” that was on display at the Iowa State Fair this past week. Janie submitted an idea that involved having childhood cancer patients paint the cow, and then it would be displayed throughout the fair.
Janie painted the body of the cow and then brought the120 pound butter cow to the Blank Children’s Hospital Clinic to be finished. Children and families at the clinic pressed their hand prints onto the quilt of the cow.

Thursday at Camp Heart Connection

Breakfast today was delicious, again. The kitchen crew has done an awesome job of keeping all of the campers and staff well-fed this week.

The annual camp basketball tournament started in the morning and continued throughout the day. The players had a good time and the top teams even got medals!

It was a great day for the pool after the tournament. The little ones jumped in and out of the pool, there were numerous water fights, and the older campers enjoyed going down the water slide.

Wednesday the girls had Aunt Fifi’s Princess Party, but Thursday was all about the boys. Mortimer’s Boys Only NASCAR Party was a huge hit. The boys were able to relax together after a day of activities and have a few afternoon snacks.

After dinner the campers got ready for the "All Camp Dance." The ladies had their hair and make-up done, and the guys put on their best t-shirts for the event. The All Camp Dance is a place for all of the campers to come together and bust a move. There was great music and everyone spent some time on the dance floor! Everyone was tired by the end of this night as today was busy, busy, busy.

Wednesday at Camp Heart Connection!

Wednesday was another great day at Camp Heart Connection!

The day kicked off with a great breakfast and polar bear swim at the pool. Then the campers headed down to the field where the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad's train picked us all up at Camp and we got to ride the train! The trip had great views and we took a lot of good pictures.

After the train ride, it was back to Camp for lunch. During the afternoon all of the regular activities opened for the campers. The teens climbed the rock wall, the little boys rode the horses and all of little girls headed to "Aunt FiFi's Princess Party!" Before the party started the girls stopped by "Aunt FiFi's Dress Shop" and picked out their attire for the Princess Party. The older boys escorted the lovely ladies down to the party where they had snacks and put together a special princess-themed craft.

In the evening we held "Camps Got Talent," the all-Camp talent show. After the talent show, the campers and counselors headed out to the woods for a campfire where they heard from Aunt FiFi. Aunt FiFi is the magical being that looks over Camp. She, along with her magical pet alligator Mortimer, make sure that all the cabins are clean, all the campers are getting along, and she even leaves special presents and notes around Camp for those who are good!

Tuesday at Camp Heart Connection

A little rain didn’t get us down! All of the Camp activities were open and campers had a lot to do today.

Campers enjoyed time on the zip line, horseback riding, making stained-glass projects in Arts and Crafts, and the rock-climbing wall.

After another delicious dinner and an ice cream social, a few different activities opened up for the cabins. The crew from the Big Wheel Rally came up to Camp and brought a few of their custom big wheels for a big wheel race. There was also a game of Capture the Flag on the field.

Later in the evening campers had the option of attending the “Drive-in” Disney movie Cars. After the movie it was lights out so we could all get enough sleep for Wednesday!

Monday at Camp Heart Connection!

Happy Monday from Camp Heart Connection, a program of Children's Cancer Connection! It's been a great start to the week, and we've had a lot of fun.

Today the campers were out and about during the day. They were able to ride horses, climb the rock wall, play field games, and enjoy the swimming pool!

We had a delicious grill out for dinner and got to meet Karsyn’s Krusaders! They showed campers their race car and campers were able to take photos with the car!

This evening the campers will showcase their vocal abilities at the all Camp karaoke. Each cabin takes a turn singing a song for the rest of the campers. After karaoke the older campers have the Teen Dance and then it's off to bed!

Meet Amy Blair

Amy’s son Blake was diagnosed at the age of two and a half with leukemia. Blake’s illness had an impact on the entire family, and Amy wanted a way to give back to other families going through a similar experience. In 2010, Amy started The Bumping for Blake’s Cancer Camp Volleyball Tournament as a way to raise money for Children’s Cancer Connection programs. This is her story.

When Blake was diagnosed at the age of two and half with leukemia as a parent my world shattered. There were so many things that I envisioned him growing up to do, and in those early months I began to question what his future would hold. The first six months were the hardest on him, and the medicine and steroids really took a toll on him physically and emotionally. The hardest part as a parent was watching his smile disappear.

The illness had an impact on the entire family, and was emotionally and physically exhausting for all of us, but I would have given anything to see him smile again. As we approached the end of his treatments I knew that I wanted to find an organization that I could give back to and really get my heart behind. Children’s Cancer Connection provided me this opportunity in supporting Camp Heart Connection Oncology and Sibling Camps. Blake went to his first camp at the age of five, and it had been a long time since I had seen him smile that much. The camp gives him a week to just be a kid again with no other cares in the world.

The Bumping for Blake’s Cancer Camp was started in September of 2010. The event is a volleyball tournament with two divisions (recreation and competitive). There are numerous raffles, a Kid’s Korner, food, visits from local celebrities, serving challenge, special prizes for kids that attended camp, and much more! On August 27, 2011, we will hold the 2nd Annual Bumping for Blake’s Cancer Camp, and our goal is to double the amount of money raised in 2010. Not only is this an event that raises money for an amazing organization, but it is also a celebration of every year that Blake has been cured!

Even though Blake is now cured it is still a challenging time for me when we take him to camp. It is a reminder of just how precious life is, and that our family has been very lucky that we now have a healthy child and an amazing support network that still stands behind us in Children’s Cancer Connection.

Friday at Camp Heart Connection

Today was the last full day for our oncology campers at Camp Heart Connection and the day was jam-packed with things to do! Of course, all of the normal activities were open to the campers, but we had a few special activities planned as well.

Campers got the opportunity to tie-dye an article of clothing and there was a campers vs. counselors version of "hide and go seek" - where the counselors hid and when the campers found the counselors the campers could push whoever they found into the pool!

The pool was busy place (again!) this afternoon. Many campers took part in the water fight on the field and came to jump in the pool after they were done splashing each other. After the campers were done swimming, they headed to dinner. We had a delicious fiesta for dinner, which included: tacos, burritos, nachos and apple enchaldas a la mode!

After dinner the annual kickball tournament will be held at the large field near the pool. Following the tournament the campers will go back up to their cabins where camper achievement awards will be given out!

After dark the campers will all gather around the campfire for Wish Night. Wish Night gives the campers and staff a time to tell their story, to thank someone who has made an impact on their life and it provides a time to come together and relate to one another. After everyone has had a chance to speak, the campers will head out to the field and lighted balloons will be released in memory of the campers who have passed away in the last year. The night will end with fireworks in celebration of a great week.

Thursday at Camp Heart Connection

Breakfast today was delicious, again, and we had huge cinnamon rolls and cheese omelets. The kitchen crew has done an awesome job of keeping all of the campers and staff well-fed this week.

There was a hike at 11:00 a.m. A few campers and counselors met at the stage and headed into the woods for a hike around camp. A few hours later there was creek stomping and the boys headed to "Mortimer's Boys Only NASCAR Party" where they made "slime" and had a few afternoon snacks. A lot of TP'ing happened this afternoon with the help of the Programs Staff.

Throughout the day the photography crew from Capturing Hope was at Camp and they took photos of all of the campers. They were great to work with and we can't wait for the parents to see the photos!

Eight teams played in the annual basketball tournament. While it was a hot day for the tournament, all of the players had a good time and the top teams even got medals! (Rumor has it that the boys from Riverside cabin won the tournament.)

After the tournament almost everyone swam in the pool. The sun was shining and it was hot - perfect pool weather! The little ones jumped in and out of the pool, there were numerous water fights and the older campers enjoyed going down the water slide.

After dinner the campers got ready for the "All Camp Dance." The ladies had their hair and make-up done, and the guys put on their best t-shirts for the event. The All Camp Dance is a place for all of the campers to come together and bust a move. Thanks to "Cubbie Bear" from Select Entertainment for DJ'ing the dance. He sure played the right tunes to get everyone on the dance floor! Everyone is going to be tired by the end of this night as today was busy, busy, busy.

Wednesday at Camp Heart Connection

We finally had nice weather today at Camp! The skies were blue and the sun was shining.

The day kicked off with a great breakfast - french toast and sausage - and then all of the campers headed down to the field for a surprise. What was the surprise? The Boone Scenic Valley Railroad's train picked us all up at Camp and we got to ride the train! For a lot of the campers it was their first time on a train. The views were grand and tons of photos were taken. We even got to take our cabin photos next to the train! (Take a look at them below.)

After the train ride, it was back to Camp for lunch. During the afternoon all of the regular activities opened for the campers. Tuesday at Camp Heart Connection

While it was a little chilly and a little muddy at Camp today, we finally avoided the rain! All of the Camp activities were open and campers had a lot to do today.

The highlight of the day was in the afternoon when the ambulance drove to Camp from Blank Children's Hospital and the lifeflight helicopter flew into Camp and landed in the field. After both the ambulance and the helicopter arrived, campers were allowed to go inside both of the different modes of transportation (keeping with this week's travel theme - 'All Aboard!') to check things out. The campers loved talking to the medical professionals that came to visit and they asked a lot of questions.

After a delicious dinner, which consisted of BBQ'd chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, rolls and brownies, a few different activities opened up for the cabins. The crew from the Big Wheel Rally came up to Camp and brought a few of their custom big wheels for a big wheel race. There was a wild game of Capture the Flag on the field - campers vs. counselors, of course - which lasted for a few hours. Arts and Crafts opened up for a special night craft and a few of the younger cabins got to enjoy s'mores around the campfire!

Later this evening campers have the option of "camping out" in Pioneer Hall where the Disney movie "Cars" will be played. After the movie it's lights out so we can all get enough sleep for Wednesday!

Monday at Camp Heart Connection!

Happy Monday from Camp Heart Connection, a program of Children's Cancer Connection! It's been a rainy start to the week, but we've still managed to have a lot of fun.

Today the campers were inside during the morning and early afternoon hours due to the rain, but they had the chance to get outside during the afternoon. When the weather cleared up the campers were able to ride horses, climb the rock wall, play basketball and even take a dip in the pool!

For dinner our friends from Karsyn's Krusaders came to grill for us! They had a great array of hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes and even watermelon. Karsyn's Krusaders also showed the campers their race car and campers were able to take photos with the car! The food was great, the car was a hit and we couldn't have been more impressed the with crew from Karsyn's Krusaders.

After dinner we had a few donors and guests visit Camp for Guest Night. All donors who have donated a camper scholarship ($300 or more) in the past year are invited to join us at Camp for Guest Night. This year Guest Night included: tours, a skit put on by the campers, and an ice cream social! We had a great group of donors and board members who came to see Camp in action.

This evening the campers will showcase their vocal abilities at all Camp karaoke. Each cabin takes a turn to sing a song for the rest of the campers. After karaoke the older campers have the Teen Dance and then it's off to bed!

Danny Joe Memorial Golf Tournament to exceed $100,000 in donations

Since 1998, the Danny Joe Memorial Golf Tournament has supported Children’s Cancer Connection, and this year, with its 15th anniversary, the tournament will have donated over $100,000 to benefit Children’s Cancer Connection.

The tournament is held in memory of Danny Joe Cornish, son of Billie and Kelly Cornish, who passed away from cancer at the young age of five. Danny created the logo which is used for Camp Heart Connection, a program of Children’s Cancer Connection, which provides two week-long summer camps for children affected by childhood cancer. Danny and his siblings have had the opportunity to attend Camp Heart Connection, and the Cornish family continues to support the Camp year after year with the success of their family-organized golf tournament.

“Children’s Cancer Connection gave us a positive way to channel our grieving by participating in fundraisers and by volunteering,” said Billie Cornish, one of the golf tournaments’ organizers. “Focusing our energy on the tournament made us feel like we were doing something that mattered. It’s been really great for our family. We’re doing something to make the childhood cancer journey a little bit easier for other families and honoring Danny at the same time.”

This year, the annual tournament will be held on Friday, June 10, at the Oskaloosa Golf Club in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The tournament includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast, lunch, great raffle prizes, fun camaraderie and post-tournament activities. "Give Back Days" to benefit Children's Cancer Connection

Charity Boutique to benefit Children’s Cancer Connection

This month, C’est Bon, a new charity boutique, opened in Valley Junction at 232 5th Street in Des Moines. Owner Bonnie Baldwin came up with the idea to open a designer retail store that would accept donations from retail stores and local community members with some of the proceeds benefiting Children’s Cancer Connection. C’est Bon will feature clothing, accessories, and even home décor.

Baldwin chose to support Children’s Cancer Connection by donating some of the proceeds from the store to the organization because she dealt with cancer at the age of 27.

“I know what it felt like when I went through it as an adult,” Baldwin said. “I can’t imagine going through that as a 10-year-old, let alone a 2-year-old who has no idea what’s going on!”

C’est Bon will help promote awareness of Children’s Cancer Connection as well as raise funds for the organizations programs and services. Baldwin plans to get settled into her new store, have a smooth opening and then she hopes to start promoting the mission and ideals of Children’s Cancer Connection.

Baldwin’s favorite part about supporting Children’s Cancer Connection through C’est Bon is knowing that she’ll be working to raise funds for a local organization. Many donors have told Baldwin that they are especially excited to know that the money she will raise through the sales of their items will be going to a great, local organization.

“I get to help raise funds for an organization that is incredibly worthwhile and I wanted to help a local organization,” Baldwin said, “…not just send money to the home office in Atlanta.”

The partnership between C’est Bon and Children’s Cancer Connection is new, but both partners are excited to work with one another. Coming soon all are invited to browse through C’est Bon’s items, to donate items or to learn more about Children’s Cancer Connection. Help ConKerr Cancer: A Case for Smiles

When Cindy Kerr’s son, Ryan, was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, she wanted to brighten up his hospital room so she began making pillowcases. She soon realized the difference these brightly colored pillowcases were making, so she began making pillowcases for the other children staying in the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Cindy’s pillow making idea took off and before she knew it, she had created the non-profit organization ConKerr Cancer. ConKerr Cancer’s mission is “helping children feel special while battling life changing illnesses.”

Currently, there are many ConKerr Cancer chapters around the nation. A local chapter of ConKerr Cancer was started in Waverly, Iowa by Brenda Cummer. After finding ConKerr Cancer on the internet, Cummer felt compelled to start making pillowcases for children with cancer as well. Cummer was able to talk to Cindy Kerr, the founder of ConKerr Cancer, and since then Cummer has become the regional coordinator for Iowa.

Cummer’s family has also been impacted by cancer. She lost her mother two years ago to leukemia and her mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. The goal she has for the Iowa chapter of ConKerr Cancer is to provide every child in Iowa that has been diagnosed with cancer a bright, cheery pillowcase.

“I do know that the little things like this make a big difference!” Cummer said.

Cummer, along with the help of many other sewing groups and other organizations, has been making pillowcases to donate to Children’s Cancer Connection for the past few months. These pillowcases have been given away at Camp Heart Connection and they have been given away to newly diagnosed children at Blank Children’s Hospital and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Recently, Cummer stopped by Children’s Cancer Connection to commemorate a milestone. She dropped off the 1,000th pillowcase that she’s donated to Children’s Cancer Connection.

“I chose to donate the pillowcases to Children’s Cancer Connection because the resources and help CCC provides to families and children can not be put into words,” Cummer said. “Children’s Cancer Connection is a wonderful organization! The camps provided to children and their families are great opportunities for families to connect.”

Nationally, since its start in 2002, ConKerr Cancer has provided over 300,000 pillowcases to children with cancer. The pillowcases have been made by thousand of volunteers from across North America and also in South Africa. Calling all Fashionistas

In just a few short weeks, Children’s Cancer Connection will host its inaugural fashion benefit, Couture for a Cause. The event will feature Celebrity Emcee First Lady Chris Branstad and women from Children’s Cancer Connection modeling beautiful apparel and accessories from C’est Bon, Worn, Plato’s Closet, Dorthea’s Closet, and Bargain Basket. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2nd at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. The program will begin at 10:30 and conclude by noon.

Tiffany K. Spinner, Director of Donor Relations said that Children’s Cancer Connection came up with the idea for Couture for a Cause around the holidays.

“We were discussing that one area of the economy that hadn’t been impacted as much was second-hand stores,” Spinner said. “We wanted to get those stores involved that cater to a niche market. I thought it would be cool to hold a fashion show with great accessories and apparel from several local designer re-sale boutiques.”

After contacting the local businesses to see if they would be willing to help out with the show, a local woman also contacted Children’s Cancer Connection about the opening of her own re-sale boutique, C’est Bon.

Owner of C’est Bon, Bonnie Baldwin, had decided earlier that the net proceeds from her store would be donated to Children’s Cancer Connection. Baldwin was looking for a way to get involved with Children’s Cancer Connection and Couture for a Cause was the perfect start.

“The new boutique, C’est Bon, is a great complement to the others stores,” Spinner said. “We then asked our board member, Christine Branstad, if she would help us secure her aunt, Chris Branstad, as our celebrity emcee…and the event just continued to grow!”

Not only will there be a fashion show at Couture for a Cause, the event will also offer an outstanding champagne brunch, the chance to be served by the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon from Drake University, the soothing sounds of live music by local musicians, a sensational swag bag with fun giveaways for every attendee and the possibility of winning some exciting prizes. The fabulous prizes include: jewelry designed by Jacci Dewdney, a professional makeover from Merle Norman Clocktower Square, Children’s Cancer Connection apparel, and the GRAND PRIZE of gift certificates to all the amazing designer re-sale boutiques!

Photo Connection Winners Announced!

Throughout the month of February, we encouraged any of the families and volunteers of Children’s Cancer Connection to submit their favorite photos to our 2nd Annual Photo Connection Contest. We received quite a few entries and now it is time to reveal the winners of each category.

Zink: the Myth, the Legend, the Zebra, a play based on a true story of one child’s journey with leukemia, will be performed the first weekend of March to benefit Children’s Cancer Connection.

The UU Children’s Theater will present the show to audiences on March 4 at 7:00 p.m., March 5 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and March 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines (1800 Bell Avenue in Des Moines). Tickets are $10.00 each and may be purchased at the door or in advance at: www.ChildrensCancerConnection.org/ZinkTheZebra.

Bob Filippone, director and producer of Zink: the Myth, the Legend, the Zebra, said theater and acting had a positive influence on him while he was in high school. Because of this, Filippone was inspired to provide a similar positive experience for the children in his church. In 2007, he decided to start the UU Children’s Theater at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines.

Each year, they hold auditions in December to prepare for the upcoming play in the spring. They have never turned away any actors and this year there are 18 children involved in the show. Bob said that it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch the growth of the children who’ve participated in the plays over the past four years. Bob then decided to produce Zink after reading over the script for a few years. “It struck a nerve that I just couldn’t shake and I had to have the chance to tell the story my way,” said Filippone.

“When I decided to do Zink, I knew what I had to do,” said Filippone. “We had to donate a portion of the proceeds to sponsor a cabin of kids at Camp Heart Connection’s Oncology Camp.”

Camp Heart Connection offers two week-long summer camps – one for children with cancer and other for their siblings. The purpose of the camp is to provide a forum for children to talk with other children who have been affected by childhood cancer and understand how they are feeling. During the week the children are able to build a network of support- a group of friends available when they need to talk with someone who “understands.”

Zink: the Myth, the Legend, the Zebra is a heartfelt show that showcases the power of imagination, friendship and uniqueness.

Coming up on Friday, February 4th is World Cancer Day. In order to spread awareness, Children’s Cancer Connection is asking you to change your Facebook profile picture for the day. We’ve created a JPEG photo that we would like our volunteers, families, and supporters to put on their Facebook. Just follow these instructions!

Children’s Cancer Connection is proud to present the 2nd annual Photo Connection Photo Contest! We encourage all Children’s Cancer Connection families and volunteers to begin gathering photos for submission that tell the story of Children’s Cancer Connection.

Photos may be submitted via our website from Feb 1-28, 2011 and all photos must be from the 2010 calendar year to be considered.

This year there are six categories: Camp Heart Connection, Family Outings, Hospital Based, Volunteer, Survivorship and Individual Child. A more detailed list will appear on our website and the photo entry form, which will be available on our website on January 31st.

Welcome New Intern: Shannon Kerr!

Children's Cancer Connection would like to welcome our newest communications intern, Shannon Kerr! Shannon is from Urbandale, Iowa where she attended Dowling Catholic High School. She is currently a sophomore broadcast news major, marketing minor at Drake University. She has been involved with many different organizations on campus including Alpha Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Student Activities Board Committees. Shannon enjoys swimming, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends!

"I'm excited to learn more about Children's Cancer Connection and all the wonderful things they do for the Des Moines community," said Kerr. "When I was younger, my older sister suffered from cancer and after seeing her survive it, it's special to me to help these families go through some of the same obstacles. It's so amazing how everything we do here has such an impact on their lives and brings joy to these families on daily basis."

Shannon is also excited about the experience and opportunites she will gain working with Emily Beckmann, Director of Marketing and Communications. She can't wait to expand her marketing and communication knowledge and skills during her time at Children's Cancer Connection.

MOMS Club of West Des Moines works hard to keep kids cozy

Oh, how we love the holidays. The generosity and kind-hearted spirits, the smiles and thoughtfulness that people bring into our office is enough cause for holiday cheer.

Last Friday, Julie Petsche of the MOMS Club of West Des Moines, dropped off 30 fleece no-sew tie blankets for Children’s Cancer Connection to give to children recently diagnosed with cancer.

The MOMS Club is a national nonprofit organization comprised of local stay at home mothers and their children who get together and complete service projects, have play dates and hold other fun programs.

Petsche said MOMS Club of West Des Moines meets during the day, a time when moms need the most support. “We offer a variety of activities for moms and children to do, including but not limited to, family parties, guest speakers, monthly meetings, playgroups and family oriented activities,” she said.

The club learned about Children’s Cancer Connection through their past work with Blank Children’s Hospital. “While we do not have the ability to have a personal connection to the children, making no-sew fleece blankets gives us the chance to put a smile on their faces,” Petsche said.

“Once we decided we'd make them, we set a goal of 10-15 blankets. We ended up with 30 blankets!” she said. “Several moms got together one night for a MOMS night in and we tied all the blankets together. It was a great time knowing we were helping the children!”

Mount Ayr Community HS holds "Tackle Cancer" event for community

Last year, David Showalter came across an article about a football team in eastern Iowa that had dedicated one of its games to raising money to fight cancer. David, a senior and quarterback for his football team at Mount Ayr Community High School, saw this as an opportunity for his team to get involved in community, support those fighting cancer and honor those whose lives have been lost to cancer.

David brought his idea to Delwyn Showalter, Mount Ayr’s co-head football coach and David’s father. “We decided this would be a great way for us to involve our football team in the community and promote the idea that there are things in life much more important than football,” Delwyn Showalter said.

The event, “Tackle Cancer” took place this fall at Mount Ayr’s homecoming football game as a way for the school and community to get involved in raising cancer awareness. The football team wore pink from head to toe and the homecoming theme was centered around raising cancer awareness.

After the game the player’s pink jerseys were sold in an auction, which proved to be the most successful part of the Tackle Cancer event, raising $26,000 alone.

“Over 120 businesses, clubs, families and individuals paid a minimum of $45 to be sponsors of the event,” Delwyn Showalter said. “We had an extremely successful event in all respects, and the final tally for our fund raising efforts stands at $31,000.”

After much deliberation and careful research, the football team and coaching staff at Mount Ayr selected two organizations in the state of Iowa that focused on youth and had an impact on families in their area.

“We feel that Children’s Cancer Connection is one of the charities that meets the criteria we set for our donation. We would be pleased to present a donation of $15,500 to help further your mission.”

The impact of one small idea from one young individual is reflected through David’s initiative to create the Tackle Cancer event. At Children’s Cancer Connection we appreciate everyone who helps enhance the quality of life for children and families affected by childhood cancer.

Giving Back All Wrapped Up in a Bow

The holidays are a time of giving and sharing, sometimes in invaluable ways. Many people head to the malls and shop all day, searching for the perfect presents for their family and friends. At the end of the day, they are exhausted, but it’s all worth it because the perfect gift was discovered; but how to get it home without ruining the surprise?

Valley West Mall annually houses a Holiday Gift Wrap Booth in center court for Children’s Cancer Connection. The booth is completely run by Children’s Cancer Connection volunteers who take time from their busy holiday schedules to wrap gifts for holiday shoppers.

Trisha Barton, Director of Marketing for Valley West Mall, said they continue to support Children’s Cancer Connection because it impacts local families right now.

“There are a lot of organizations that deal with cancer research and things that look to the future, hoping to one day cure these terrible diseases,” Barton said. “Children’s Cancer Connection is there now, when the families find out that this is happening to their family.”

Big Wheel Rally: Make A Difference

Getting dressed up in costume and riding a big wheel down the street in the prime of winter may sound outrageous, but it’s one of those things you just have to experience for yourself.

The Big Wheel Rally is a bar crawl and opportunity for adults to express their creativity together by creating costumes and unique big wheels to ride between locations on Ingersoll Ave.

The Big Wheel Rally has supported Children’s Cancer Connection for nine years and continues to increase support dollars every year. “The first year supporting Children’s Cancer Connection in 2002, we raised about $1,300,” Austin Gill, an organizer of the event said. “This year our goal is $20,000.”

This year’s event will take place on December 11 at 11 a.m. will start at Zimm’s Food & Spirits and continue on to GT, Yacht Club, and Carl’s Place. Costumes and big wheels are optional but always encouraged.

Austin Gill decided to get involved in Big Wheel Rally because his mother was diagnosed with cancer around the same time. “After seeing what my mom and our family went through, I couldn’t imagine having to deal with all of that as a kid,” he said.

Molly Gill also helps organize the event as a way to help families of children affected by cancer. “A good friend of mine lost her brother to cancer when we were in high school,” she said. “That made me first aware of the need to help both kids with cancer and their siblings.”

Bringing Smiles and Holiday Cheer

The holiday season is upon us and many individuals dedicate this season to thinking of others by reaching out to help someone in need of extra cheer in their life.

Families with children who have received a cancer diagnosis within the year are often overwhelmed with the treatment process and the holidays can be an added stress. The Adopt-A-Family program was created by Children’s Cancer Connection for those families to be able to celebrate the holidays, despite the additional financial burden the families are experiencing, due to additional hospital costs.

Local businesses, civic organizations and extended family choose to sponsor a family and receive a list of items they need in addition to holiday gifts the kids would like. Each family also receives gift cards to local grocery stores and gas stations to assist with day-to-day expenses.

The sponsors bring the purchased items to the Children’s Cancer Connection office, so the staff can deliver the gifts one week before Christmas. One staff member shares their past story of a gift delivery:

“One delivery that really touched my heart was to a single mom and her three children; the youngest was a one-year-old with cancer. When we arrived, one of her children hugged my co-worker’s legs the minute we walked into the door. The family lived in a small apartment with a couch, television and kitchen table with one chair. The family had no Christmas tree to put the presents under, so we placed them in a room that had a crib and stroller along with a deflated air mattress the mom was using as her bed.
Knowing that Children’s Cancer Connection’s Adopt-A-Family program helped make this family’s Christmas brighter was a wonderful feeling to have during the holiday season.”

AIB student Megan Calmer exceeds service requirements with Children's Cancer Connection

Megan Calmer, a student at AIB College of Business in Des Moines, started volunteering with Children’s Cancer Connection to fulfill service requirements for the college. After her time requirement had been met, she continued to come back and make a difference in whatever way she could.
“Every time I see a smile on one of the kid’s faces, I feel like I am making a difference,” Calmer said. “I see how appreciative all the families are that they have Children’s Cancer Connection, where their kids can be kids and get the support they need.”

Calmer is inspired by the lively spirits of the children who have been touched by cancer. “Every time I am around the children, I realize that it is all the little things in life that make is so wonderful,” she said.

Following her college graduation, Calmer would like to enter the non-profit sector to continue making a difference in the lives of others.

“The first time I volunteered [at Children’s Cancer Connection] was during my second term at college and I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life,” Calmer said. “Volunteering at Children's Cancer Connection has inspired me to go into non-profit after college.”

ABC5 joins in to promote Holiday Cards by Kids

After the children designed the cards in the summer, they were printed and packed in the fall, just in time to be sold in the winter. With all the hard work that goes into the creation of Holiday Cards by Kids, how does Children’s Cancer Connection spread the word?

Eight years ago, the local television station ABC5 stepped in to help Children’s Cancer Connection tell the community about Holiday Cards by Kids.

Doug Sawyer, promotion manager and public service director at ABC5, said it was something they agreed to “in a heartbeat.”

“Our News Department had done a few stories on [Camp Heart Connection] so we were familiar with the camp and knew how many people and families it helped,” Sawyer said.

The station helps promote the cards by airing a thirty-second public service announcement that describes the cards as well as the kids who created them.

“We try to show the holiday cards, take [viewers] along for a quick visit to camp and show some of the great kids and families that they can help,” Sawyer said.

“I think we also have helped raise awareness for the Children's Cancer Connection, so that when families need help, they know [Children’s Cancer Connection is] out there for them,” he said.

This year marks the 60th year that WOI-TV has been on air, and they have been helping local charities from the beginning. “We know there are many local businesses that believe in investing in the community like we do,” Sawyer said. “And we’re always looking for a way to build a better community.”

It appears as though all their generosity and airtime has helped the cards get noticed and purchased by members of the community. “I've heard more than a few stories from viewers that have purchased the cards because they saw the public service announcement on ABC5,” Sawyer said. “That's always gratifying.”

Coconut Castaways bring sunshine to Maddy's Classic

There’s nothing like a little sunshine to brighten up the day, which is why the Coconut Castaways of Des Moines love to volunteer in a tropical style. The Coconut Castaways have collaborated with Children’s Cancer Connection for three years of sand and sun.

Tammy Hollander, former cruise director of Coconut Castaways said the group initially began working with Children’s Cancer Connection at Maddy Cunningham’s Classic Volleyball Tournament. “We were looking for volunteer opportunities and helping at a sand volleyball tournament sounded like a lot of fun,” she said.

Helping at the first tournament hit close to home for many of the Coconut Castaways when a fellow members child was diagnosed with cancer.

“Kory Ellerbeck was one of our original volunteers and his son Derek, then 3, was diagnosed with the exact same type of cancer as Maddy,” Hollander said. “That is one of the things that keeps us coming back and working hard for the cause.”

Last year was the third year of Maddy’s Classic and the collaborative effort with the Coconut Castaways. “We expanded into a silent auction and that, combined with the large number of teams, helped raise more money than the first two years combined. That's a great feeling,” Hollander said.
“[Children’s Cancer Connection] is a great organization that helps a lot of families when they need it most,” Hollander said. “We'll continue to do what we can to support them.”

Annual Golf Outing honors one, benefits many

For the past 16 years, City Carton Recycling and the Ockenfels Family Foundation have held a golf outing in tribute to a family member who died of childhood cancer.

Kathy Ockenfels, affectionately referred to as Kathy O, was the co-chair of the golf outing in 2010. “Our golf outing is in tribute to Debbie Ockenfels, a member of the Ockenfels family, who died of cancer at the age of 17,” she said.

The outing sells out every year, in both the number of people participating and the vendors present.

“I think everybody that comes [to the golf outing] has had some experience with cancer. The disease itself it a horrifying thing that we have to figure out how to cure,” Kathy O said.

In addition to honoring Debbie’s memory, the Ockenfels Family Foundation donates all of the proceeds from the annual event to the American Cancer Society and Children’s Cancer Connection.

“Because [these organizations] directly affect children within our regional area, it becomes very important to us,” Kathy O said. “City Carton Recycling and the Ockenfels Family Foundation are very committed to helping local charities.”

Director of Donor Relations at Children’s Cancer Connection, Tiffany Spinner is honored to partner with the Ockenfels Family Foundation. “They run one of the best golf outings in the state and they have made such an impact on our organization,” Tiffany said.

After the 2009 outing, the Ockenfels Family Foundation donated over $47,000 to Children’s Cancer Connection. The long-time partnership has allowed the Ockenfels to give close to $150,000 to help children and families affected by childhood cancer.
Kathy O believes that donating to Children’s Cancer Connection is a way her family can directly help those suffering from cancer. “Children’s Cancer Connection, being in Des Moines and serving children within Iowa, is just a perfect fit.”

Falcons Fighting Cancer

The girls’ basketball team at Louisa-Muscatine High School kept busy last season. On top of keeping a winning record, they chose to hold a fundraiser to benefit Children’s Cancer Connection.

On Dec. 18, 2009, the girls’ team competed against Columbus Junction in a basketball game, but the real event was “Falcons Fighting Cancer.” They sold over 300 t-shirts prior to the game, totaling over $2,600, which was donated to Children’s Cancer Connection.

Head Coach Nate Sanderson said the girls’ collectively chose Children’s Cancer Connection because it benefits those with cancer from across the state of Iowa.

The event was organized by the 2009-10 girls’ basketball team with the support of Tanya Fordyce, Louisa-Muscatine Booster Club Treasurer.

This year there are six categories: Camp Heart Connection, Family Outings, Hospital Based, Volunteer, Survivorship and Individual Child. A more detailed list will appear on our website and the photo entry form, which will be available on our website in January.

The top three photos in each category and the overall grand prize winner will be showcased on our website and blog and mentioned in our E-Newsletter.

Penny-wars raise money for Coins for Campers

Coins for Campers is a program schools participate in by raising funds in their own way for Children’s Cancer Connection. This year, Walnut School was the first school to hold a drive and donated $1147.75 after a week-long penny war between all classes.

Nicole Cunningham, pre-school para at Walnut, organized the event to celebrate Alec Mertz, a former student and Children’s Cancer Connection program participant, whose life was taken by cancer five years ago when he was in 4th grade.

Cunningham, who is a friend of the Mertz family, wanted to do something to honor Alec’s memory. “My initial idea was to have a jeans day for the teachers,” said Cunningham. “After looking around online I thought a penny war seemed like a great idea that would get the kids involved during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”

Cunningham was unsure of where to donate the money after it was raised, so she turned to Michelle Mertz, Alec’s mother. “She suggested donating to Children’s Cancer Connection or Make A Wish Foundation,” said Cunningham. After looking at our website and our mission, Cunningham decided on Children’s Cancer Connection.

Cunningham motivated the students to participate by creating a flyer with Alec’s picture and the Children’s Cancer Connection mission. The results she saw were surprising.

Walnut has students from Pre-K to grade 12, and the $1,147.75 total was raised by only 179 students. Alec’s younger brother, Michael, a freshman at Walnut, and his class raised the most money in the penny war. “A few classes stepped up to the plate and brought in a lot more that we expected, which helped us reach such a high total,” said Cunningham.

"Pepper in Some Hope" with Chili's and St. Jude!

Chili’s entered a commitment with St. Jude to donate $50 million dollars over a ten year period. Since 2006 when the commitment began, Chili’s Create-A-Pepper campaign has raised $30 million dollars for St. Jude.

Visit their website to create your own custom pepper or head to Chili’s on The Big Day, Sept. 27, when 100% of the profits from every meal will go to St. Jude.

Funds raised in the initial year of the Create-A-Pepper campaign helped to open the Chili’s Care Center. It holds the radiological sciences department, bone marrow transplant unit and multiple research labs. Click here to read more.

Garage sales are common among many neighborhoods during the summer months, but something rare is a garage sale, put together by children to raise money for a friend with childhood cancer.

Avery Merkley, a third grader, organized a two day garage sale in August to raise money for her friend, Will Krueger, a child who is affected by cancer and who is also one of Children’s Cancer Connection’s program participants. Avery did everything to prepare for the sale from making signs, pricing items and setting up the inventory.

One bright red sign read, “All of my sales go to my friend with cancer.” At the end of the sale, Avery gave the money to Will, who decided to donate it to Children’s Cancer Connection.

How Sweet It Is...

Pilled high with rich frosting and covered with bright sprinkles can make it hard to resist a cupcake—especially when they are being sold for CancerCare for Kids program.

Because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, CancerCare for Kids created the national, annual event Cupcakes for a Cause to benefit their service which provides free support services to children and their families affected by childhood cancer.

Anyone can support this program—even if you don’t want to eat or bake. The Cupcakes for a Cause website offers the opportunity to create an e-cupcake and send it to your friends and family! The service is free but the official sponsor, got2b, is donating $1 for every e-cupcake sold, up to $10,000. To date, only 1,080 have been sent so jump over to their website to help them reach their goal.

For those interested in some finger-licking fun, across the nation, businesses, families and friends get together to bake cupcakes and donate the proceeds to Cupcakes for a Cause. Get a team together and start baking!

Grocery stores and bakeries are celebrating Cupcakes for a Cause Week, September 20-26 by selling specially decorated cupcakes and donating back a portion of the proceeds.

iCANcer App Combats Cancer with Pocket-Sized Organization

Apple recently released the first app for iPhone and iPod touch that manages the cancer journey. iCANcer is meant to benefit cancer patients, survivors and caregivers alike. The app helps manage your medical information by allowing you to calculate the ANC, graph labs, log treatment, save doctor appointment information, log side effects and late effects.

The app has many other features to put your mind at ease:

It’s official! The designs have been picked for our 2010 Holiday Cards and we are ready to sell them to you!

This year, we are excited to be holding our very first unveiling event where you can come see the cards for the first time and meet the child artists! The open house will be held during Girls’ Night in the Village(an event hosted by John Stoddard Cancer Center) from 5-7p.m on September 30 at Simply for Giggles in the East Village. Stop by and have some hot apple cider and cookies while you look.

Cards will be available in retail packs of 24 at the Brass Armadillo, Heart of Iowa Marketplace, Simply for Giggles and The Lagniappe. A mail order form will be available beginning September 15 on our website.

Changes Made to Keep Children's Cancer Connection Strong

As you are well aware, we are facing one of the most difficult economic times in our nation’s history. Like many companies and organizations, Children's Cancer Connection has also been affected. In order to ensure that we weather this economic storm and have the ability to maintain our programs for those facing childhood cancer our Board of Directors has chosen to act proactively and has made the hard decision to cut a number of budget items to ensure the strength of this organization.

We have made significant cuts to every expense line item including supplies, equipment, printing and postage and all other areas that we could do without, or delay, until things turn around. The most noticeable impact of these cuts however, includes a reduction in our staff.

This week we had to say farewell to our Receptionist – Cheryl Angier. Cheryl has been the morning voice of the organization for nearly three years.

We also had to say goodbye to our Director of Programs and Volunteer Services, Brecka Putnam. Brecka joined us in February of 2008 and has been instrumental in helping us grow our programs. Brecka brought the first “Survivors of Childhood Cancer” program to Iowa and has been a huge advocate of our family based programs and services.

Brecka asked that we share a note from her –

"Dear friends,

It has been a joy to work with and get to know you over the past few years. I have learned so much from you, and am amazed by the strength of families touched by childhood cancer and the compassion of the volunteers that serve them. It is with sadness that I inform you that my position at Children’s Cancer Connection has been eliminated due to financial reasons. I will miss those of you that I have worked with greatly, but I take comfort in knowing that this decision was necessary to preserve the organization and allow Children’s Cancer Connection to continue providing excellent services for families. We are saddened that we have had to make these deep cuts and that our Children's Cancer Connection family has been affected. We are dividing responsibilities to ensure that we maintain our current level of programs and services. We feel very fortunate that we have managed to not have to downsize as long as we have. Many other organizations were forced to do this early in the economic down turn, and others have had to close their doors.

Both our Board of Directors and I are committed to do what it takes to ensure that we will be here to meet the needs of every family that needs our services and programs.

Bumping for Blake's Cancer Camp

Upon hearing that her son would be finished with treatment in September, Amy Setser wanted to give back to one of the many organizations that helped them during the 3 ½ year journey. “I wanted it to be an organization that I could really stand behind and get excited about helping,” said Setser, Blake’s mom. After Blake attended the oncology camp this year, Setser knew that Children’s Cancer Connection was the organization that she wanted to support.

Bumping for Blake’s Cancer Camp Volleyball Tournament will be held at Hawkeye Tap in Davenport on Saturday, September 11 starting at 9 a.m. In addition to the double elimination volleyball games that will be held throughout the day, the event will host a water balloon toss, serving challenge, raffle and 50/50 drawings. Of course, there will be fun for the kids as well! The Kids Korner will have face painting, temporary tattoos a water balloon toss and games with prizes.

New Intern - Marina Shawd!

Children’s Cancer Connection is excited to welcome Marina Shawd as their new communications intern. Marina is currently a sophomore attending Drake University in Des Moines, with majors in magazine journalism and graphic design. She is involved on campus with Kappa Alpha Theta, Society of Professional Journalists and writing for the campus magazines.

“I am looking forward to all the experiences that Children’s Cancer Connection has to offer,” said Shawd. “I love that I not only have the chance to use skills from both of my majors, but that I will also be helping an organization that benefits numerous families in the surrounding community.”

In her time here at Children’s Cancer Connection, Marina hopes to increase her knowledge of marketing and design while benefiting the lives of children and families dealing with cancer.

Kids' Summer Lemonade Stand Donates Profit

What’s better than a glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day? Knowing you helped give back to the community while doing so!

In early August, $40 was donated to Children’s Cancer Connection by a few kids who held a lemonade stand in their neighborhood. Morgan, Clara and Leo Stuedemann along with their friends, Sydney and Tommy Ross (all of West Des Moines) worked really hard all day to sell lemonade and brownies.

They began the day by making signs and hanging them up all over the neighborhood. The kids felt very good about raising the money that would help others and so did the customers, who were glad to support Children’s Cancer Connection (some even gave a little extra for their treats!). By the end of the day, the kids had sold the goodies to friends, neighbors and even the FedEx driver!

Thank you for thinking of Children’s Cancer Connection on a hot summer day!

Two Events to Benefit Children's Cancer Connection on Saturday

Children's Cancer Connection is excited to have two great events that will benefit us this weekend. The 7th Annual Brinks Co-Ed Kickball Tournament as well as Maddy Cunningham's Classic Volleyball Tournament will both take place on Saturday, August 28.

The Brinks Kickball Tournament will be held at Raccoon River Softball Complex in West Des Moines starting at 8a.m. and continue throughout the day. Hosted by Brinks Social Club, this event has donated funds to various organizations. The members of this networking group began the event in order have fun while giving back to the community. This year, Brinks is continuing their two-year partnership with Children's Cancer Connection in order to benefit as many families as possible.

Maddy Cunningham's Classic Volleyball Tournament is taking place at Sands Volleyball Club from 9a.m.-7p.m. and is hosted by Coconut Castaways. After receiving support from Children's Cancer Connection, Maddy's parents wanted to create a fundraiser that would give other families the opportunity to experience that same support. Coconut Castaways, a local non-profit community service and social club, hosts the event and provides many of the volunteers.

Sibling Camp 2010 Recap: Sunday, Aug. 15 - Tuesday, Aug. 17

Over 180 sibling campers, a record number, are attending Children's Cancer Connection's 23rd Annual Sibling Camp at the Y-CAMP in Boone from June 13-19. Camp Heart Connection’s Sibiling Camp is one of the largest and most exciting programs Children’s Cancer Connection operates. And thanks to generous donors, including The University of Iowa Dance Marathon, which is The Presenting Sponsor for 2010, and the 100 member volunteer staff, campers are able to participate for free.

Here's an update on what has happened at Camp Heart Connection's Sibling Camp this week!

Sunday, August 15 - Campers arrived to check-in at Camp Heart Connection's Sibling Camp. During check-in we had day volunteers running carnival games, prizes and making cotton candy! There was also a rock wall brought to Camp by The Iowa National Guard for the sibling campers to scale. As tradition goes, the all-camp photo was taken, and that was followed by Superhero Training, which consited of an all-camp game, lots of other games to work on superhero skills, all while trying to avoid the super-villains. The night was rounded out by s’mores by the campfire.
Monday, August 16 -This year's Camp theme is, "Superheros Super Camp." Because of the theme, a helicopter and ambulance from Blank Children’s Hospital came to Sibling Camp as a part of our "Everyday Heroes" program. The kids were in awe when the helicopter landed at the YCamp's field. The afternoon was filled with a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament in Chase Lodge, temporary hair dying in Arts & Crafts, swimming in the pool, archery, and rifelry. There were also seven photographers at Camp from Flashes of Hope to take photos of the sibling campers. To round out the day campers enjoyed karaoke and the Teen Dance in Pioneer!
Tuesday, August 17 - There was a lot of rain on Tuesday throughout the day but it didn't hinder the fun that the sibling campers had. Because of the weather, Arts & Crafts was a busy place and a water balloon fight broke out because the kids were already soaked from the rain. There was a large kickball tournament, a West Des Moines fireman stopped out to talk to the children as a part of the "Everyday Heroes" program and the kids participated in a "Minute to Win It" game in Pioneer. At the end of the night the campers watched "The Incredibles" and had the option of having a “sleep out” in Pioneer, which was supposed to be outside but due to the rain was moved inside.

"Fore the Kids" benefiting Children's Cancer Connection

The Tom Best Memorial and The Young Open joined forces on July 4th at Toad Valley Golf Course in Pleasant Hill, IA to present, “Fore the Kids". The event included a 4-man best shot golf tournament, luncheon, and post-tournament festivities.

The golf outing had a great showing of 21 foursomes! Children's Cancer Connection would like to thank everyone who participated in the golf outing and especially those who planned the event.

The McAlexander family, a family who has used Children's Cancer Connection's programs and services, were the guests of honor at "Fore the Kids." The McAlexander's (who are pictured at the right) told their compelling story about their son being diagnosed with cancer. They informed all attendees what Children's Cancer Connection has done for their family.

To both The Tom Best Memorial and the Young Open, there was no better way to honor their friends and relatives than to join together to transform the annual get-togethers into a charitable endeavor benefiting the Children’s Cancer Connection.

Dog Affected by Cancer Visits Camp

On Monday June 14, Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary & Rescue paired up with Children’s Cancer Connection and brought in a special dog that knew all about cancer to Camp Heart Connection’s Oncology Camp in Boone, Iowa.

Joe, a man from the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary & Rescue, brought Bear, a rescued dog who has battled cancer and undergone chemotherapy treatment, to Camp Heart Connection as a part of the “Everyday Heroes” program. Joe visited with 170 campers who have been affected by childhood cancer about Bear’s experience with cancer and about the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary & Rescue.

Joe shared with the children that Bear’s journey with cancer inspired him. Joe talked to the children about Bear taking medicine, going through treatments, and staying positive, which the children related with well.

“I hope that the kids can look to Bear as another source of inspiration for them,” said Meridith Sayler, Logistics Director at Camp Heart Connection. “Joe made sure to emphasize that he didn’t think that he was a hero at Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, but he insisted that it was Bear that has the hero qualities of being a great friend and a fighter.”

The smiles and laughter coming from the children as they played with Bear and learned about his experience made it evident to all around that Bear helped the children relate their battles with cancer to others who (even animals) face the similar things on a daily basis.

“Joe and Bear brought such joy with them to camp,” said Sayler. “To see all of the smiling faces of our kids as they got unlimited hugs and kisses from Bear was great. At Children’s Cancer Connection we regard both Bear and everyone at Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue as our heroes.”

Quilting for a Cause: Ankeny Area Quilter's Guild Makes a Donation

After over 150 pillowcases, Louise Whitlow (pictured below on the left), is still sewing away with the help of the Ankeny Area Quilter’s Guild. Whitlow and the guild have been making pillowcases for Camp Heart Connection’s Oncology and Sibling Camps for the summer of 2010.

“We have a family member with leukemia and she got to know the kids in the chemo room and I thought it would be good to give them to the camp after talking to Brecka,” said Whitlow. ” I am Vice President of the Guild and the VP picks a project for the year. I came up with the pillowcases because of my family member when we were trying to perk her room up at the hospital.”

It takes about 20-30 minutes to make each pillowcase depending on the skill of each member. The pillowcases begin by cutting up all the fabric into patterns and then making them into kits that can be sewn at a later time.

“I have one sewing group that has done at least 1,400,” said Whitlow. “They get an assembly line going and it is fun to watch them go.”

The Ankeny Area Quilter’s Guild has made and donated 1,600 pillowcases since last September to places such as Children’s Cancer Connection, Blank Children’s Hospital, Methodist Oncology Center, Mercy Hospital, nursing homes, hospices, and the Mentor Iowa. Once they are done with the pillowcases for Children’s Cancer Connection they will pick a new project and continue sewing away for other great causes.

In celebration of Maurices' one year anniversary in the Coral Ridge Mall in Iowa City, IA, the store had staff members nominate several charities and then had their customers and friends vote on the most deserving. Immediately following lunch, Brecka, the Camp Director, got pied in the face because she received the most coins during the Coin Drive this week. This afternoon is packed with fun activities for the last afternoon at camp such as tie dying, rifelry, the water fight and another “Everyday Heroes” session – the Police Chief from Huxley is coming to show the campers what he does everyday.

Tonight we will have last round of s’mores, there will be Circle Awards, where each camper will receive an award from the cabins around them, we’ll have a special program for the graduating seniors and LIT graduates, a slide show of pictures from the week, Wish Night, and even fireworks!

It has been a great week at Camp Heart Connection, but it’s almost time to end the week. Thanks to our presenting sponsor, the University of Iowa Dance Marathon, and other gracious donors and volunteers, this week has been a blast!

Hello, gorgeous weather! We are finally seeing the sun in the sky here at Camp Heart Connection. We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day! All of the outdoor activities, as well as the pool, are busy today filled with energetic campers.

The annual Princess Party is this afternoon and the girls couldn’t be more excited to dress up for the event! Each year old prom dresses are donated for the girls to wear to the Princess Party. This event is filled with little Debbie snacks, punch, fingernail painting, getting make-up or hair done and just having some plain ‘ole girl fun! The ladies are escorted down to Chase, where the party is held, on the arm of an older male counselor or LIT (Leader in Training). This event will bring big smiles and lots of sparkles to the afternoon!

We’ve already seen some awesome dance moves and heard some musical talent, but tonight is the night for the campers to show off a little more! The talent show was a blast with everything from the History of America to Lady Gaga.

This evening the all-camp activity is meeting the infamous Aunt Fifi! Aunt Fifi is the good witch that protects Camp Heart Connection. Aunt Fifi leaves notes treats for cabins who are good, helpful or who are keeping their cabins nice and neat! The campers will head out into the woods and Aunt Fifi will appear and talk about each cabin and how the week is going.

Tuesday, June 15 - Camp Heart Connection

Tuesday was a great day filled with lots of superhero-themed fun. The campers all participated in “Superhero Training,” where they all acquired skills such as unfreezing t-shirts, succeeding in team building activities and defeating the obstacle course! By the end of the afternoon we had the best crew of superheroes that you could ask for.

In the afternoon, as a part of the “Everyday Heroes” program, an ambulance and an EMT crew came from Boone to show the kids what they do everyday. The ambulance was a big hit and the campers were full of good questions for the EMT’s!

Throughout the day cabins took part in horseback riding, climbing the rock wall, swimming, playing sand volleyball, making their memory boxes at Arts & Crafts (thanks to Integer for helping donate some creative supplies), and competing in the annual Basketball Tournament.

The final activity for the night was watching the movie, “The Incredible’s,” under the stars in the field outside Pioneer. After the movie was over the campers were given the option to camp out under the stars. Since we had a beautiful night, lots of campers decided to take part!

Monday, June 14 - Camp Heart Connection

Despite the random rain showers, today has been a busy day. Arts and crafts was packed this morning and the campers were busy making superhero masks, bracelets and origami!

As a part of our “Everyday Heroes” program, Joe and Bear, a dog from the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Boone, came to camp to meet the campers! Bear, a kid-friendly and lively dog, has something in common with our campers - Bear is also affected by cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

Campers also got to enjoy horseback riding, climbing the rock wall, swimming in the pool, playing cards, practicing for the volleyball and basketball tournaments, and even more arts and crafts!

Tonight is "Guest Night" at Oncology Camp. At dinner we will be joined by a group of donors who have donated a camper scholarship or more, and they’ll be taking a look around camp to see their donations in action.

After “Guest Night,” it’s time for karaoke! Campers, cabins and staff will take turns singing their favorite songs and little later on in the night the teens will take part in the Teen Dance. By the end of the day, the campers (and staff) are ready for a good nights sleep!

Sunday, June 13 - Camp Heart Connection

Camp Heart Connection Oncology Camp began yesterday as over 150 excited campers checked-in at the Y-Camp in Boone, Iowa. Some campers had been coming for years, and others were just checking in for the first time, but one thing they all had in common were the big smiles that they were wearing.

“It’s always exciting seeing the returning campers and meeting the new campers,” said Brecka Putnam, Camp Director. “We are going to have a great week full of superhero-themed fun!”

After the campers checked-in they headed down to the carnival, which was run by members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) who awarded prizes and ran the carnival games. By early evening parents and campers said their good-byes as the campers headed down to the dining hall to eat dinner – lasagna, broccoli, bread, salad bar and Rice Krispies bars!

The all-camp photo, a magic show put on by Jacob Raymond and a special “camp edition” of the hit TV show, “Minute to Win It,” followed dinner. From blowing ping-pong balls into cups, to eating a cookie that has been placed on your head without using your hands, the games were a hit with campers of all ages.

The first night at camp was brought to an end by the light of a campfire and, of course, a few s’mores!

Danny Joe Memorial Golf Outing a Success!

On Friday, June 11, thirty-one foursomes came out in support of the 14th Annual Danny Joe Memorial Golf Outing at the Oskaloosa Golf Club. There were folks from Georgia, Minnesota, Colorado and Florida! Thanks to the help of Mother Nature, the rain held off so that everyone could have a good time at this year's golf outing!

This year, a friend of the Cornish family painted the Camp Heart Connection logo on the course! The rainbow, now in the Camp Heart Connection logo, was originally drawn by Danny Joe, who the golf outing is in memory of. Over the last 13 years, this event has raised more than $100,000 to support the programs and services of Children's Cancer Connection. It was great to see everyone and we look forward to next year already!

It's Almost Here - Camp Heart Connection!

This week the staff at Children’s Cancer Connection is busying getting ready for the 155 campers who will attend our 24th Annual Camp Heart Connection Oncology Camp, which kicks off on Sunday, June 13 and will go through Saturday, June 19. Camp Heart Connection is one of the largest and most exciting programs Children’s Cancer Connection operates each year at the Y-Camp in Boone, IA.

Children who have ever been, or are currently being treated for childhood cancer are invited to participate in a week-long camp full of swimming, arts and crafts, field games and much more fun. The oncology camp gives these children an opportunity to meet other campers experiencing the same emotions and lifestyle that comes with having cancer as a child.

Camp Heart Connection aims to bring campers confidence, independence, and positive relationships throughout their time at camp. And thanks to generous donors, including The University of Iowa Dance Marathon, which is the Presenting Sponsor for 2010, and the 100 member volunteer staff, campers are able to participate for free.

Children’s Cancer Connection would like to welcome Lucille Carver, one of our new communications interns. Lucille is from Bettendorf, IA and is currently a junior public relations major Drake University in Des Moines, IA. She has been active on campus with Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Student Senate committees. Lucille also enjoys golfing, music, and laying out by the pool.

“I can’t wait to learn more about Children’s Cancer Connection and the impact is has on the families it serves," said Carver. "This is a really special opportunity because I know how important these programs are to families with cancer. It’s neat to work for an organization that truly brings joy to so many people."

She is also excited about the experience she will gain working with the Director of Communications and Marketing, Emily Beckmann. Lucille hopes to broaden her experience with public relations and communications during her time with Children’s Cancer Connection.

Spring Cleaning to the Extreme!

Children's Cancer Connection's office is getting a makeover. With the renewal of our office space contract, we were entitled to a few perks and we're here to share! The construction in the office began last week and will continue...until it's done! We are getting new carpet, a few walls taken out (it's going to be much more spacious and open), as well as some new paint on a few of the walls. A few of the offices will be getting switched around and we'll gain space for a better conference room! We are excited to get the project done and to hang up the beautiful pictures of the children and families that we serve on our re-vamped walls. Once we are all put back together, stop by to take a look! For now...take a look at the progress:

Love golf? Passionate about giving? Bring 'em together and help Children's Cancer Connection.

Birdies for Charity is a fundraising program for Children's Cancer Connection designed to give participants an opportunity to generate contributions based on the number of “birdies” made by PGA Champions Tour players during The Principal Charity Classic 2010.

To start, Children's Cancer Connection would appreciate a minimum donation of $.02 or more per birdie or a minimum flat donation of $10. For example, if you pledge $.02 per birdie and there are 800 birdies made, your pledge would equal $16.00 (800 x $.02 = $16.00).

By making a pledge, you also have the opportunity to guess the number of birdies made by the PGA Champions Tour Players in The Principal Charity Classic. If you guess the correct number of birdies made, you have an opportunity to win one of four prizes donated by John Deere Credit: two riding lawn mowers, a push mower, and a grill!

A pledge can be made online at Children's Cancer Connection or by picking up a pledge form from our office. If our charity reaches $1.00 in $.02 penny pledges, then we are eligible to receive a percentage of $30,000 in bonus bucks! Flat donations do not apply towards the bonus bucks incentive.

Event Spotlight: Catch the Spirit 5K

Children’s Cancer Connection is proud to present the 4^th annual Catch the Spirit 5K as this week’s spotlight event. The Koepke family of Waverly, Iowa, has been with Children’s Cancer Connection since 1999, and their daughter Megan lost her battle to cancer in 2007 – spurring on this fundraising event for Camp Heart Connection. To date, the run/walk has raised almost $12,000.

"After Megan's first experience at camp, we felt like we were part of a very large support network and extended family," says Rhonda, Megan's mom. "It was so wonderful to allow all of our daughters a "normal" camp experience, a time to not worry about our lives with cancer in it. We were fortunate to also be able to put together our own fundraiser for the camp program at Megan's school."

Shortly after Megan passed away, Waverly-Shell Rock Junior High created a day to recognize students for their character, complete with a Catch the Spirit award for students that exemplify integrity and good character, a run/walk though the town of Waverly and a barbeque at the end. All proceeds from the event go to Camp Heart Connection Oncology Camp, and participation costs $10.This year, Catch the Spirit 5K will be held on May 5 from 3:30-5:30 pm.

“It is an amazing day, and we can't think of a better way to honor our daughter's memory than to reward good character of junior high students and to support the camp that has meant so much to us over the years,” says Rhonda.

Drake Relays Street Painting

Today a few staff members from Children's Cancer Connection went out into the community to help celebrate this year's Drake Relays by participating in the first ever Drake Relays Downtown Streeting Painting. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and over 40 teams came out to support the event.

Our Task: To create an awesome 4 x 4 square on Court Avenue outside of Spaghetti Works that captured the essence of Children's Cancer Connection while supporting the 2010 Drake Relays.

Our Team: While our task was great, an expert team helped to lead the way to the finish line. Now, let's meet the players:

Mark Slocum, Coffee Connoisseur and Logo Outlining Specialist

Theme: The theme for our square was based off of the Drake Relays theme this year, "Drake Relays 101." We decided that we definitely wanted to get our new logo and motto (The entire family. The entire journey) out there, while adding a little Drake flare. Therefore, we painted our logo alongside a few lanes of the Drake track with three Drake hurdles. We tied Children's Cancer Connection into the Drake Relays theme by adding our tagline for the square, "Helping families...one hurdle at a time!"

Challenges: We overcame a few a few "hurdles" of our own...

The wind and blowing debris - Ok...so it was a few pieces of grass and leave here or there...
Distraction - All of the other squares looked awesome! It was fun to go and look around at all of the different ideas that people had come up with.
Meatball the Bulldog - He's soo cute! It's really hard not to want to watch him walk around in his little Drake jersey and crown! Okay, so he was more of a distraction really...
Needing the "Drake blue" color - Thanks to our awesome friends at the Downtown Neighborhood Association and from a friendly ask from Mark, we overcame this obstacle and obtained a little "Drake blue" for our square.

Overall, the day was a success and all of the street paintings turned out really well. While we didn't come home with the top prize, our team assures you that our square "seriously rocks." So now you're probably saying, "Show us your square already!" Here goes nothing:

Volunteer Spotlight: John Bisenius

This week’s spotlight is stellar volunteer John Bisenius. In June, John will celebrate six years with Children’s Cancer Connection – and through those years, he has taken part in Club HOPE, Family Camp, and the Children’s Oncology Camp Association International Conference.

“With all the different programs, it’s my favorite to able to watch the kids in a place where cancer doesn’t really exist – watching the kids being kids, also watching how they support each other, knowing they’ve all been through the same thing,” says John.

And not only do the kids impact him, but John feels like he’s making a difference in their lives as well. “These kids can do anything while we’re here – we’ll find a way to make it work for any child no matter their diagnosis,” he says. John feels that, after Club HOPE meetings, parents can even provide for their children better after the support the Club offers.

“I look at the kids – siblings, children diagnosed, as well as families and parents – and there’s so much of what we go through every day that are really just annoyances,” John says. “But you look at what they go through, what they have gone through…They face everything with a smile on their face, without showing any ill will toward anybody.” And that’s a common thread through Children’s Cancer Connection volunteers’ experiences.

We know that, during a battle with cancer, there are many more important things to do than surf the internet. But for those spare moments, here are four great Twitter feeds to give you quick tidbits of information and inspiration along your journey.

@AlexsLemonade offers heartwarming stories about kids raising money to fight childhood cancer. It all started when 4-year-old Alex Scott started a lemonade stand to raise money for "her" hospital -- and the foundation continues to this day.

@Bear4kidscancer is based out of Chicago, IL. They, like Children's Cancer Connection, provide hope and support for those battling kids cancer, and their twitter feed also comes with inspiring stories and timely ideas, like Mother's Day gift ideas that give back to children's cancer.

@superbigsmile isn't cancer-related. Instead, it offers pictures, videos, and stories that match well with its name -- and give you a superbigsmile.

@Coping_cancer shares content from Coping with Cancer magazine -- straight from its editor. Directed toward all cancer survivors, not just pediatric, this feed shares survivors' stories and more.

Spotlight: Celebrations Send Kids to Camp Heart Connection

While Children’s Cancer Connection prepares camp staff and our campers get excited to head to Boone this summer, another piece of the puzzle is also falling into place: funding.

Last week, Dr. Braxton Pulley, our board president, hosted another successful “30 Kids to Camp” event at the Capital Room in Des Moines’ East Village. More than 100 people attended the event – and over $10,000 has been raised to date! Dr. Pulley has raised enough to send more than 33 kids to Camp Heart Connection.

Within the office, our very own Meridith Sayler is hosting her own birthday celebration, too: “24 Kids to Camp.” She has already surpassed her end goal, and still has her birthday celebration event to come at the end of April.

Since celebration-style events like these began in Children’s Cancer Connection in 2008, over 100 children have been provided the chance to go to camp.

Also, this position will assist in maintaining the organizations website and Social Media Networking tools- Facebook, Twitter, Blog, ect.

This internship will provide a student the ability to increase their portfolio with press releases, marketing pieces and website development. Because of the part-time nature of this opportunity, a student could potentially hold another job/internship. We offer flexible scheduling and a fun, fast-paced environment where students can directly impact the lives of children dealing with cancer.

Volunteer Spotlight: Leah Fenchel

Children’s Cancer Connection is proud to introduce Leah Fenchel as this week’s spotlight volunteer. She’s been working with Children’s Cancer Connection for eleven years, and continues to maintain the commitment and care that make her such an asset to Camp Heart Connection. A cancer survivor herself, Leah gives back by being part of our camp staff.

“The bonding, the fact that everybody gets to leave and be imprinted upon with all the memories, the friends, everything,” make up Leah’s favorite part of being a Children’s Cancer Connection volunteer. She feels like she makes a difference when campers come back for a second or third summer and come to look for her since she’s connected with them over the years.

After camp, Leah says, “You don’t take anything for granted.” And with camp coming up in a couple months, Children’s Cancer Connection is excited for another summer with Leah and the rest of the amazing camp staff.

Mark's Take On Why We Changed Our Name

"By now you are aware, we have changed our name and look. When we began pondering this change I was reluctant. We’ve always been The Heart Connection and we have always had the cute rainbow as our logo. My logical side understood the why, my emotional side didn’t like it. Let’s face it, change is hard.

As we worked through the process, nearly eighteen months, I began to understand better. I understood because it is all I ever have known. But to the family whose child has been recently diagnosed – they have cancer – not a heart problem. Friends that I have known since starting with the organization nearly 18 years ago still ask me, “How’s it going at Iowa’s Heart Foundation for Kids with Cancer”. The need for change became clearer.

So what about the logo? The new logo is part of the branding process, which includes a total make over, creating a look and feel that is consistent. We were very fortunate to receive support and guidance from the Integer Group, a world leader in promotions and retail marketing. Best of all, they were able to help us keep the name and logo as part of the organization.

Children’s Cancer Connection is the umbrella under which each of our four program areas will have a name and logo: Survivorship, Hospital Based, Support Services, and Camps and Recreation. The Camps and Recreation program area is now known as Camp Heart Connection and the rainbow is its logo.

Change is hard for those of us who have always known the organization one way. But as I have learned over the past eighteen months, we need to always be aware of the obstacles that keep those who both need and support our programs from finding the services that we provide, and strive to overcome these obstacles."

Indianola Camp Fire Club Donation

Puzzles, coloring books, Silly Putty, and Tinkerbell socks overflow from a blue bin at Children’s Cancer Connection. A toy boat, lifelike turtle, bottle of bubbles, and tic-tac-toe set are piled on top. Provided by the 78 girls of the Indianola Camp Fire Club, these gifts are going straight to the hands and hearts of kids battling cancer.

The Camp Fire Club celebrated their 100th anniversary this month. But instead of keeping the party to themselves, the Indianola Camp Fire Club shared the wealth – and shared gifts for Children’s Cancer Connection’s “Poke Box.”

“In honor of this milestone, we thought it would be a great idea to bring a birthday gift to Children’s Cancer Connection,” says Kamie Haynes, the third grade Camp Fire Girls leader. “When we learned about the need for kid-friendly band aids and prizes for the “Poke Treasure Box,” we wanted to help.”

From Spiderman Band-Aids to Slinkies and puzzles, the Camp Fire Girls donated very important supplies for Children’s Cancer Connection kids going through treatments. After the Camp Fire Girls’ generous gift-giving, the “Poke Box” will be full of fun choices. After those “pokes,” the kids’ arms will be decked in camo, SpongeBob, and tie-dye bandages.

“Children's Cancer Connection does amazing things for some amazing kids, and The Indianola Camp Fire Club wanted to be a part of it!” Kamie says.
The Indianola Camp Fire Club brings together girls in kindergarten through grade five. They enjoy service projects like walking dogs at the animal shelter, visiting local residents in nursing homes, and now, making exciting donations to Children’s Cancer Connection.

Children's Cancer Connection Still Has Heart

On Monday, March 29, The Heart Connection Children’s Cancer Programs will be reborn as Children’s Cancer Connection. The Heart Connection has been providing support and services for children with cancer and their families since 1988 – and their latest improvement is a big one. Clearer and more succinct, the new name and image will enable Children’s Cancer Connection and its staff to continue their mission: to enhance the quality of life for children and families affected by childhood cancer by providing programs for education, recreation and support.

“After months of careful thought and reflection, we chose Children’s Cancer Connection as our new corporate name to better explain who we are and who we serve,” according to Mark Slocum, Executive Director. “It truly says what we do: connect children and families affected by cancer with the services they need.” Furthermore, the name eliminates misunderstanding about the word heart in the name; Children’s Cancer Connection is clear about who they are and what they do.

Children’s Cancer Connection’s flagship programs, the Oncology and Sibling Summer Camps, are also undergoing changes. “Our summer camp program has never had an official name,” according to Slocum. But it will now. “In honor of those who first said, ‘Whether we are sick or healthy, doctor or patient, we are all connected by the heart,’ we have named our camp program ‘Camp Heart Connection,’ and the rainbow logo will serve as the camp’s flag.” The original logo, drawn by Danny Cornish during his battle with cancer, has been selected to be the official logo of the camp program.

Through the changes, it is important to note that Children’s Cancer Connection is the same caring, compassionate, dynamic organization with the same staff and volunteers. The organization still provides the same beneficial programs and services that adapt to fit the needs of those they serve.
